Manchester City boss gives an update of Ederson's injury

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola claims goalkeeper Ederson suffered a muscular problem in the Champions League draw with Atalanta, putting him in doubt for the trip to Liverpool.

The Brazilian was replaced by Claudio Bravo at half-time of City’s game at San Siro on Wednesday night.

Bravo was then sent off for a challenge on Josip Ilicic, with right-back Kyle Walker going in goal for the final 10 minutes.

Premier League champions City travel to Anfield on Sunday evening for their biggest game of the season so far.

And while Guardiola refused to rule out his first choice keeper for the game, his comments would suggest he is a doubt.

When asked if Ederson would be fit for the trip to Anfield, Guardiola said: “I don’t know right now.

“It’s a muscular problem. It was not big but I took him off to avoid risk. He didn’t feel comfortable in the last minutes and that’s why we decided to make a substitution.”

Manchester City should have had the game won by half-time against the Bergamo side, who were playing the game almost 50 miles away from their Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia home ground because it does not meet UEFA standards.

Instead, nearly 30,000 Atalanta fans made the journey to Milan to play at the home of AC and Internazionale.

After taking an early lead through Raheem Sterling, City had a chance to double their lead through Gabriel Jesus but his penalty was awful and his shot angled wide of the post.

This gave the Italians added incentive and they equalised four minutes into the second half through Mario Pasalic.

Bravo had only been on the pitch for minutes but was soon picking the ball out of the net and it got worse for the Chilean.

With 10 minutes remaining Bravo came rushing out and hauled down the onrushing Josip Ilicic to be given his marching orders.

With no more goalkeepers on the bench it was right-back Walker who ended up between the sticks.City held out though to claim a point that leaves them agonisingly close to sealing top spot in their Champions League group.

Guardiola will now turn his attention to the daunting trip to Liverpool and he may have to do so without Ederson available.
